What causes dark knees? In most cases, it’s from excess melanin in the skin called hyperpigmentation. Usually this occurs on areas of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun, so if you find your knees are too dark, it’s likely caused by overexposure to UV rays. The good news is that there are several home remedies you can try to fade those dark knees and return them to their former glory without spending hundreds of dollars at the dermatologist’s office!

1) Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is one of the most popular home remedies for dark knees. It helps to clean and exfoliate the skin, which can help to lighten the appearance of dark spots. To use, mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water. Apply the mixture to your knees with a cotton ball and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and moisturize afterwards. Repeat this process 2-3 times per week for best results. After cleaning and moisturizing your knees, continue with the rest of your daily routine. One warning though: apple cider vinegar may temporarily stain clothes or linens, so be sure to test out the remedy before using it on an important occasion!

2) Onion Skins
Did you know that onion skins are a great way to get rid of dark knees? All you need to do is place a few soft onion skins on your knees for about 30 minutes. You can also try adding a little bit of vinegar to the mixture. After about a week, you should see a noticeable difference. Another method is to add milk or cream and wrap with some soft cheesecloth. Leave this on for about 20-30 minutes and repeat as needed. You can also use another type of poultice (such as oatmeal) in addition to an onion skin poultice. Add water and let it soak overnight. In the morning, remove from pot and let cool until warm but not hot. Add more water if necessary so it’s a thin consistency. Let this soak on your knees for at least half an hour before taking off and wiping clean afterwards. If you want to speed up the process even more, use cucumber slices instead of onionskins (this works better if they’re thick).

3) Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe Vera Gel is one of the most popular home remedies for dark knees. It has soothing and healing properties that can help to get rid of darkness and pigmentation around the knees. To use, simply apply some gel to the affected area and massage it in for a few minutes. You can do this once or twice a day until you see results. It is recommended to not wear tight clothing while using aloe as they may aggravate the skin more. With enough time, your kneecaps will be smooth and blemish-free.

4) Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is one of the most popular home remedies for dark knees. The citric acid in lemon juice helps to lighten the skin and improve its texture. Plus, lemon juice is a natural astringent, so it can help to tighten and tone the skin. To use, simply apply fresh lemon juice to your knees with a cotton ball and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off. You can do this once or twice a day until you see results. For best results, try doing this after showering while your pores are open. Try not to overdo it because too much citrus fruit on the skin can irritate sensitive skin.

5) Turmeric
Turmeric is a natural bleaching agent and can be used to lighten dark knees. To use, mix turmeric powder with some milk or water to form a paste. Apply the paste to your knees and let it sit for about 30 minutes before washing it off. You can do this once or twice a week until you see results. If you don’t want to buy turmeric, try boiling a few slices of ginger in hot water. Let the tea cool down before applying it on your knees and letting it sit for about 15-20 minutes. Repeat this process 2-3 times a day and watch as your skin tone gradually changes.

6) Yogurt
Yogurt is a natural bleaching agent. It also contains lactic acid, which helps to lighten the skin. Apply yogurt to your dark knees and leave it on for about 30 minutes before washing it off. You can do this once or twice a day for best results. You can use another mild soap if you like, but make sure you rinse thoroughly with warm water.
While some people are allergic to dairy products, there are many benefits of eating yogurt such as improved digestion, relief from upset stomachs and even clearer skin. Lemon juice: Take the juice of one lemon in a small bowl, mix in one tablespoon of honey and then dip cotton balls into it. Put these cotton balls onto your knees after having them washed first with cold water. Leave them on for about 20 minutes before washing them off again with cold water. Repeat this process every other day until you see results!

7) Rose Water
Rose water is a natural toner that can help lighten dark skin. Mix two tablespoons of rose water with one tablespoon of glycerin and apply it to your knees. Leave it on for 20 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. Repeat this process once daily for best results. You can also find pre-made rose water tonics at most health food stores. Apply sunscreen before going outside so that you don’t undo all the work you just did!
